About

I am Professor at the Haas School of Business in the Economic Analysis and Policy Group and a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

I am a public economist who studies topics related to energy, climate, the environment and taxation. I completed my Ph.D. in economics at the University of Michigan in 2008, and I have a B.A. in economics and political science from Macalester College.

I was the founding co-director of UC Berkeley’s Master of Climate Solutions, a professional master’s degree that trains students who want to be part of the solution to the climate crisis. I am now the faculty director of the concurrent degree program that links the MCS to MBA students at Haas.

I am a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a Research Associate of the Energy Institute at Haas. I contribute to the Energy Institute’s weekly blog on energy economics and policy.

I am also an Amazon Scholar. At Amazon, I work on the company’s efforts to decarbonize.
